The Brunny: Old Bar, Young Crowd
The Brunswick House, more commonly known as The Brunny, was founded in 1876. Today, it is one of the oldest bars in Toronto that is still in operation. It is located at 481 Bloor Street West, at the corner of Brunswick. Since the 1970’s it’s been labeled as a “college bar” attracting students from all over Toronto, especially U of T.
As the neighbourhood changed over the decades, so did The Brunny’s clientele. The Annex became one of Toronto’s wealthier areas, being just a stone’s throw away from the snooty but lovely Yorkville.
Many students still line up on Bloor Street every Thursday to Saturday, waiting to pay $5 for the red “The Brunny” stamp, strategically placed on the forearm so no one tries to get in using the “but I washed my hands” excuse.
Once you’re in, the drinks are cheap, the music is exactly what you want to hear, and if you’re a twenty year old boy, the women are right up your alley.
As for us, we’ll continue making appearances to visit our good friends who work there, and to sit at the DJ booth making endless requests to annoy our buddy DJ Paul Masi.
