5 Rules to Follow for Finding the Perfect Jeans

It seems as though lately I’ve been all about the denim. Here on the blog, on instagram and really, just every day life, it seems like all I ever wear is denim. While I can swear that I don’t wear it every single day, I do wear denim quite often. It’s an essential item in my wardrobe that I can sincerely always count on to give my outfit a casual, yet classic look, and even though my boyfriend would disagree, I’m a firm believer that you can never have too much denim. Ever!

Since I’ve come to the realization of my denim obsession, I’ve also noticed lately how many questions I’ve been getting about tips on how to pick denim, what brands work for what body shape, and any advice I have on what works best. The truth is though, I am no expert, however I do have enough experience shopping for the right denim, so I am excited to share those tips here on the blog today.

Shopping for denim isn’t a science, but it can sure feel like it, so keep reading and i hope these tips help you pick the perfect pair of jeans for your bod and style!

Fit Is Everything

I can’t stress enough about how important the right fit is. The first step in looking for the right fit is actually focusing on what fit flatters you. I tell ladies this all the time – don’t just go for the size that “fits” and you can button or zip up. Sometimes, trying a size larger or smaller can actually flatter you more, depending on the stretch and brand. I am always shocked to see women who just grab the size they “think” fits rather than going up a size. The biggest misconception I see when it comes to finding jeans (or any other piece) is that women are so afraid to go up a size that they are not interested in finding out which size actually looks better.

It can be discouraging or a bummer, but sometimes going up a size in your denim will flatter you more. Ladies, don’t get caught up with the number that you see on the jeans, just be open minded and think about how it looks! After all, no one is reaching in your bottom and looking for the size tag!

When In Doubt, Go For Stretch!

Every woman needs a pair of stretchy denim. Whether it’s a super stretch or just offers a little give, a stretch pair of denim is essential and will really take you a long way. I advise to go for a darker wash with your stretch denim so that you can get more wear out of it. I’m talking dining out and wearing sketchy denim so you can be comfortable but look sleek and chic!

Most jeans usually have about 2% of Lycra or elasticity to them, but don’t limit yourself. Take a look at the label and look for blends that include linen or elastic like spandex. Who says denim can’t feel like comfy sweats!

Large Back Pockets Accentuate

I am someone who likes a clean and classic thread pattern to my denim, but there are so many designs and trendy looks that are coming out right now. Hello flower embroidery!

The point though is to look at where you want to draw attention and where you want to hide it. For me, I don’t hate my butt (in comparison to other parts of my body) so I always like to pick up a pair with a larger back pocket or if I go for a design, I try to go for one that isn’t all over my thighs since that will only accentuate them. The idea here is to focus on what you want to hide and what you choose to accentuate and then work from there. Once you try on the denim you like, you will be able to see what works and what doesn’t!

Flares Elongate

After a while, I realized how many skinny jeans I owned, and I didn’t own enough bootcut or flares. In my recent post with Reitmans here, I rediscovered how much I love a good bootcut  mid-rise. It really elongated my legs and I was even told multiple times in the day how tall and slender they made me. I do love a good tuck-in top and denim combo which can go for a work and play and can create and really polished look. This, of course comes with finding the right fit, but rather than picking up another pair of skinny jeans, I urge you to pick up a great flare or bootcut pair!

I promise you will be in love!

Don’t Limit Yourself

Ladies, I know shopping for denim can be terrifying at times, but I promise once you get the hang of it, it will be more enjoyable than anything. The key though, is to not limit yourself. When I go shopping with clients to help them pick up basics, I simply ask them what they like and then I pick up the denim.

I don’t listen to the “but I’m too short” or the “my thighs are too big for that pair” nonsense because like anything in life, you don’t know until you try it. Also, don’t get stuck in the rut of picking up the same fit and brand all the time. Get out of your comfort zone and broaden your horizons! You will be amazed by how much you can change your look by just letting go of the criticism in your head. Have fun while shopping and focus on just feeling sexy and comfortable in your denim.

Denim will take you from day, to night and from work and play, so make sure you are open to the possibilities and have fun trying new looks and new brands. There are so many brands out there that create amazing denim, so make a day of it with your friends and look for some bootylicious denim!

I hope this helps on your next quest for the perfect denim and if you have any questions at all, feel free to email me and I’ll be happy to help!
