Everything You Need to Know Before You Do Yoga

Doing yoga for the first time can be a little daunting. Will you be expected to do one armed hand stands the first time around? The short answer is no. People of all abilities and ages can do yoga. It isn’t all about being the most flexible or the fittest either; it’s great for the soul. If you want to de-stress and get fitter while you’re at it, you should try it. Here’s everything you need to know before you do yoga.

You May Struggle at First

Yoga isn’t as easy as it looks. It’s a low impact exercise, so you stand much less chance of hurting yourself than if you were weight lifting or running. However, you still need to try to bend yourself into some funny positions. Some will be easy, others will be hard. All of them will help you to become more flexible and fitter. You’ll build more muscle definition as a result. You may not burn fat, as it isn’t high intensity or calorie burning, but with more muscle definition you’ll automatically burn more calories and fat in real life.

Sometimes You Have to Partner Up

If you feel uncomfortable working with people you don’t know, you should get comfortable before you try yoga. Some poses will require you to partner up, and sometimes, you’ll all need to participate in group exercises too, where you all hold hands. It could be anything on any given day, so make sure you’re up for it.

You Don’t Need a Class

If you don’t want to go to a class, you don’t have to. You could just as easily get a book, or go on YouTube and find some tutorials on there. Then you’ll definitely be able to find something you feel comfortable with. When you’ve got the gist, then you could head to a class and meet some new people or just continue to do it solo. The one thing that I find beneficial about a class is that you have somebody talking you through what to do, and sometimes that’s just to lie there and focus on something. You might be told to clear your head and just breathe. You might even find that you’d like to be the one to do the talking and learn how to teach with a place like Centered Yoga. Lots of people find a love for yoga and then decide to turn it into a career!

Nothing is Impossible

Some of the yoga poses may look impossible to you now. If you’re consistent with your training, you’ll do fine. Eventually, you’ll be able to do all of those poses that you once thought were impossible. The first thing you need is a positive attitude! When you have that and you’re willing to try anything, you can do anything.

Don’t let any thoughts you have about not being good enough stop you from doing yoga. All you have to do is get started!
