How to Save Money While Travelling

How to Save Money While Travelling

I’m a firm believer that you haven’t fully lived until you travel. As I’ve mentioned, 2016 will hopefully be the year of travel, so now that I have my travel bucket list, the only thing left to do is plan.

While travelling can give one such a high and sense of contentment, planning a trip can get pricey. Rather than just jumping into a vacation without a plan, I’ve put together some tips for saving money while travelling. That way, whenever I plan my dream trip, I can get organized then sit back, relax and plan the best trip possible!

To start, in order to maximize on your saving when travelling, I highly recommend picking up a Capital One Aspire Travel MasterCard so you can earn rewards points on whatever you purchase and wherever you purchase it. Not only can I book my own trip including hotel, airline or rental car and pay for the taxes on my travel with my reward miles, it’s simple to use and I can enjoy no blackout dates or hidden fees!

If you don’t want to spend your reward miles on another trip, then they can also be redeemed towards travel related expenses like a taxi/limo to the airport, airline and more, as well as gift cards and even cash!

Another method to making your trip less expensive is by simply planning ahead. Researching hotels, resorts and locations mean you know where you can splurge and where you can save ahead. Looking at prices of accommodations and flights can change all the time so doing your research will give you better and more inexpensive options.

The time of year when you travel can really determine how much money you are going to spend on your ticket and travel essentials. If you can avoid it, don’t head to the hot spots for Christmas or when school summer holidays begin. Travelling off-season gives you a better chance at finding better bargains! For example, Europe still has beautiful weather come September, but with kids back at school, flights will be cheaper and your destination and travels will feel a lot less crowded!

Dining out while travelling is an expense you can’t ignore, but it can definitely be modified to allow for some indulgences. When travelling, keep your dining to more local spots rather than touristy restaurants. Chances are the local spots will have more, but cost less and give you the ‘’real deal” food culture. Don’t hesitate to split meals with friends so that way you can try different plates and share to get the full experience rather than putting all your pasta in one bowl, so to speak!

While these are just a few tips to help you save some cash while travelling, I suggest that picking up a rewards card like that from Capital One will make the entire travel experience so much better from start to finish – just by allowing you to collect and redeem points on travel and travel expenses.
