Night in Style with Andy Jones

Night in Style with Andy Jones

King West was home to the Night in Style event on the 5th of April as up and coming designers, Christopher Paunil, Christopher J Nevin and Andy Jones showcased their latest collections in a fashion show which took place at Crown Lounge in the heart of Toronto.

Andy Jones showed his latest pieces on the catwalk Thursday night. A George Brown fashion student and fashion entrepreneur, Mister Jones has just recently been a contestant on Canada’s Got Talent. Though he did not make the cut to become a contestant on the live show, Jones was not discouraged. As he always has been since I have been introduced to him, his motivation has been fueled by his love and respect for fashion.

I had the opportunity to see all the pieces before they hit the runway. Jones explained that the pieces used are what he had made for Canada’s Got Talent but due to not making the next round, he was lucky enough to have the opportunity to showcase his talents during Night in Style. As friends dear to me know, I love gold, and I almost felt as if Andy knew I was coming that night.

I specifically fell in love with this chic vest that Andy had altered with leather buckles which was previously a vintage blazer.

Andy’s show began and finished with a lovely ballerina and model by the name of Victoria, who set the mood for the collection. Models strutted the runway in shimmering golds and classic black and white pieces as guests enjoyed their cocktails and gabbed with each look that came out.

While Andy is a student who still believes he has a lot to learn, you can definitely get an understanding of his love for designing. In each piece that frolics down the runway, you can imagine the hard work that was put into each outfit.

I was lucky enough to steal Andy away after the show to talk to him about the collection and how he began his journey in fashion.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in fashion design?

A: When I saw my first fashion show when I was 12 on Fashion Televison it is Gucci when Tom Ford use to design for the luxury label.

What was the first piece you ever designed?
A:Ha ha these very wide leg raver pants in grade 8 lol HILARIOUS!
What do you think sets you apart from other up and coming designers?
A:I have established a very strong network, I am open to helping other designer, and have the endless drive to get me to my destiny.
What inspires you as a designer?/Who are your fashion icons?
A:MADONNA, Gwen Steffani, and Alexander McQueen
What matters to you most when designing?
A: That the collection is cohesive and is properly sewn and finished.
How did you prepare for Night in Style?
A:I had an amazing PR team from World of 4, properly managing my time ha ha my agenda is my best friend, and staying focused.
How was your experience with Canada’s Got Talent?
A: I really feel liek I learned a lot interms of how the entertainment business is, I really got to bond with Dina Pugliese she has been so kind to me I have nothing but respect for her, and I was working a head. I got cut from the show, and half of the collection I showed in “Night In Style” was suppose to be my next showing on Canada’s Got Talent that was never shown because I got cut. So then Melissa Hwang from World of 4 called me up (as she modeled for me as well on the show) and said we need to show the work, and that is how “Night In Style” was born. Who is the Andy Jones girl? ( what kind of girl would wear your clothes)
A: Her name is Blythe (figuratively speaking). She is innovative but also classic she is on the edge of fashion but is not going to fall off the edge. She dresses for her self and not men. She does not care if you find her sexy or not she knows she is attractive not everyones cup of tea but a loyal friend, and she love chow chow puppies ha ha.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned through designing?
A. Make sure you know what you are doing know how the fabric wants to behave don’t try to make it be something it wont be.
Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
A: Establish in several stores with the T-shirt line and focusing on trying out for the Toronto Fashion Incubators New Labels competition.
The night was a success. The designers were relieved and proud and by the end of the fashion show, it was apparent that the night had just begun!
