The Holiday season is finally here and that means Holiday dinners and parties are right around the corner.  Ever wondered how to eat healthy when dining out but didn’t know how?  Girls of  T.O have complied a few tips just for you.

Read the menu & nutrition guide before you go:  It’s 2013 and most restaurant menus are available online alongside the nutrition guide. With that being said,  research the restaurant and menu before you go so you’ll  know what to order ahead of time. This way, you won’t have to peek at the menu and continuously changing your mind won’t be an option.

Water only: Don’t bother looking through the drink menu, instead of the regular smoothies, juices or pop. Ask only for water. The amount of calories, you just missed out on is great! If you choose to have a glass of wine. Keep it to one glass. It is the Holidays afterall!

Order salad first (Ask for dressing on the side):  Although, restaurant salads aren’t that great, they are better than the unhealthy appetizers, you’ll see on the menu. Ask for minimal dressing or a Lemon to sprinkle on the top.  You’ll get your veggie fix off of the salad, that’s for sure.

Soup is your best friend:  After ordering your salad, soup is the next best option. Always remember to order a lighter soup with a clear base. There will be less calories, cholesterol and fats.

Red Meats: If you cannot refrain from eating red meat then order the smallest serving possible, 3 oz. (Equivalent to the size of a deck of cards) Many restaurants start at 6 oz, if that’s the case. Only eat half and save the other half for the next day. Choose sirloin cut, t-bone, or porterhouse.

Avoid Butter or Cream: Majority of restaurants use butter on EVERYTHING. Kindly, ask your waiter to have your food prepared without butter or cream.

Bread? No.  Skip taking a bun, roll or even toast tonight. You really don’t need it.

An empty plate is a bad idea: It’s okay to have leftovers. Finishing your entire meal isn’t necessary. You definitely don’t want to feel uncomfortable after your meal. Take the remainder of your meal and enjoy it another day.

Hope these tips were helpful! Happy Holiday eating!
