Wedding Talk with Weddingbells Magazine

We aren’t sure if it’s just us, but it seemed like this past Holiday season was the season of engagements. So many new brides and grooms are getting ready to tie the knot in the new year and it’s no surprise that over 1 in 3 engagements occur between December and February, so now is the time brides-to-be are looking for nuptial ideas and inspiration. Regardless of your budget, style and who you say “I do” to, there is no reason why you can’t have the day of your dreams.

Celebrating Weddingbells’ 30th Anniversary, we got talking with Roseanne Dela Rosa, Associate Editor at Weddingbells‘ on 2015 wedding trends and tips on how to get your groom involved, how to incorporate the Pantone colour of the year, Marsala and much more to help make your big day even better!

What do you see as the biggest wedding trend of 2015?

Green décor, especially in florals is a big wedding trend for 2015. Last year, we saw lots of green garlands on the scene–from chair décor to centrepieces. I’m not surprised to see the popularity of greenery stem into this year. Green wall décor, lots of lush bouquets surrounded in greenery and greener centrepieces will be a key trend.

What is the easiest way to save money on your big day?

Cut the guest list. For those anticipating bigger celebrations and don’t want to skimp on anything else, narrowing down the number of people you invite can shorten the amount of food, alcohol, invitations, favours, cake, and all the other little elements, you need.

The Pantone colour of the year is Marsala. Do you see brides jumping on the trend? What’s the easiest way to incorporate it?

Marsala is a beautiful colour. But, because it’s so bold, I can understand how brides might have a hard time incorporating Marsala into their colour palette. The easiest way to add this tint to your wedding? I’d say go for a naked Red Velvet wedding cake. Not only is it the easiest way to incorporate, but it’s also the tastiest.

Brides are opting for greenery over flowers these days. What types of greenery will make a big impact for weddings?

Israeli Ruscus, Italian Ruscus and Huckleberry, all have a waxy texture and are the closest to emerald green that you’ll get. These leaves are quite beautiful when bunched together in a bouquet or garland. Brides who love green, but have a pastel palette can alternately turn to light greenery like Dusty Miller’s or Eucalyptus–which look gorgeous when paired with softer shades.

What are three common wedding planning mistakes?

  • DIY’ing your entire wedding. A misconception about DIY weddings is that they cut your wedding costs, which is not entirely true. DIY projects are fun, but they can be labour intensive and materials can ultimately add up, not to mention they can be time-consuming. Before you tackle any DIY project, ensure you do your research, find out how much the materials cost, how long will it take and see if you have enough time to complete it.
  • Making your friends your wedding vendors. It’s a nice gesture when you want to involve everyone. But, unless your friends are in the wedding industry, leaving things to the pros is the best thing you can do. Asking your friends, who shoot nice photos, to take your wedding photos is a lot for someone to take on. Vendors, who are used to the logistics of the day, will understand what needs to be done or shot. Besides, wouldn’t you want your friends to enjoy the wedding then having them run around?
  • You under budget. When it comes to putting together your budget, be sure to account for hidden costs, like cake-cutting fees and tips. Set a realistic budget and know when to splurge or save. Compromise on the things that don’t matter, the worst thing you can do is to plan a wedding you can’t afford.

What’s the easiest way to get your groom involved in the planning, even if it isn’t “his thing”?

It’s important to get your groom involved in planning–it’s his day too after all. But, if sifting through your Pinterest board isn’t appealing to him, put him in charge of things he enjoys. For example, if he loves music, ask him to book the band/DJ. Or, if food is his thing, get him to research caterers in the city or types of food he’d love to serve. Your groom will thank you for tasking him with projects he understands and can tackle!
