Even though we are now getting into hot hot Summer, it’s hard to think about the coming chillier seasons, but why not plan ahead right? I was formally introduced to the brand Mooseknuckles a few weeks ago at their Fall/Winter 2013 preview, and after roaming the racks and checking out their latest styles, I knew this was a brand to look out for.

While we see far too much Canada Goose ( in my opinion), it’s so refreshing to see a Canadian outerwear brand that is offering up something different. Led by Canadian designer and regular jokester, Will Poho, Mooseknuckles is the brand that brings sophisticated outerwear styles with traditional Canadian esthetics and some added flare from Poho and Co-Creative Director, Dave Gillespie to those who want to look chic in the Canadian cold.

Luckily, Mooseknuckles isn’t just all winter gear. They have some great Spring/Summer pieces that are perfect for the outdoorsy type! If you know me, I’m a true sucker for plaid, so I was smitten when I eyed this flannel shirt and nothing is better than leather details like this denim jacket with leather sleeves.

I got the opportunity to ask Will a few questions about how his career started and what he likes to do after the bars close in the summer time. ( It’s the best idea ever!)

Okay, I need to know. Where did the name Mooseknuckles come from?

The name Moose Knuckles is an ‘out of the box’ branding idea.  The odd name attempts to add a dynamic element to the brand, set us apart from the competition, and give us a distinctive character.  An element of Canadian distinction is Canada’s comedic reputation as well as our nation’s obsession with ice hockey.  So from this I arrived at MOOSE KNUCKLES:

So when was it that you decided you wanted to become a designer?

I decided  I wanted to become a designer in high school , well that and I wanted my career to be full of hot women and parties.  So…. Life is on track.

Haha, that sounds like the life! Where did you gather influence for your Fall 2013 collection? 

Primarily Canadian heritage.  We took time honouring Canadian Garments and re-invigorated them for an urban audience.

Love the new collection! You also add funny drawings on the inside of your jackets. What made you start doing that?

Since we are a new Canadian brand and we don’t have a lot of history in relation to Canadian heritage  I thought of focusing on other elements of grand Canada such as humor and Hockey.  I think the consumer is smart enough to know that our coats will keep them warm so   I would rather entertain the customer, engage them and let the quality and warmth of the coats speak for themselves.

What a clever concept! So, what do you think is the biggest misunderstanding about style in the Canadian winter? 

Well we can all agree it gets pretty damn cold so no confusion there.   Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you have to look like the Michelin man!  You can still be stylish below zero!

Agreed. Michelin man is not a good look for anyone! What are some of the things you love about Canada?  

We have this huge beautiful country with a diverse group of people in it.  We have so much freedom, rights, and opportunities.   The natural resources, the wildlife  EVERYTHING.  I love so many things about Canada!

I can agree with you on that! What is one of your favourite Toronto hot-spots? 

All the public pools in downtown core after the bars close.  Christie Pits and Alexandra Park pool specifically.  Naturally I dream of swimming in the summer after talking about Cold Canadian winters.
