Golden Girls: My 5 Favourite Metallics

Golden Girls: My 5 Favourite Metallics

It’s not very often a trend comes along that you can wear during winter, but which will take you well into spring and summer. But, that’s just what has happened with one of next season’s key trends. Big-name designers including Dolce and Gabbana and Jenny Packham sent their models down the spring/summer 2014 runways wearing shimmery, shiny metallics in hues ranging from muted bronze to bright gold. Here are a few of my favourite metallic pieces so far:

The finishing touches

If you don’t want to buy into the metallic trend in quite such a full-on way, then accessories are the perfect way to get the look in a style which is much more subtle. Because the metallic trend is one of those styles which has come back into fashion time and time again, vintage stores are the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind pieces from the 60s, 70s and 80s that you won’t see anyone else wearing. This original 1980s shoulder bag could easily be worn with a LBD or as a cross-body bag for a more casual look.

Gold t-shirt

I love the short sleeved gold t-shirt by Roaman’s for La Redoute because it’s so versatile and I can see myself wearing it all year round. I’m going to team it with a black skater-style skirt, heels and a statement necklace for dinner dates and parties. But, when the weather warms up, it would look equally beautiful with denim cut-offs and sandals.

Metallic dress

Celebrities including Lindsey Lohan have been spotted in metallic frocks at high profile events and on the red carpet recently. And I’m going to be following suit with a beautiful golden gown. This crochet dress from Missoni is stunning yet simple. It has a slim fit that flares away below the hips and a dipped back that adds just a hint of sex appeal. I’ll be styling mine simply with high black heels, a clutch bag and cocktail ring. It’s a piece I can see myself wearing throughout the year whenever I have a night out with the girls.

The gold cover up

This golden cardigan is another piece which is beautifully versatile. You could use it to update your LBD by wearing as a cover-up. Or, you could team it with denim shorts for summer’s seasonal music festivals and with a white dress and wedges for summer parties.

Sequinned skirt

If gold isn’t blingy enough for you already, you could always add some sequins. This skirt from Jarlo is in a fashion-forward shape and could easily be worn on the party circuit with a lace cami top and heels or with a chunky knit and biker boots to dress it down for daywear.

While some trends are here to stay for one season, before – thankfully, in lots of cases – falling out of favour, metallic clothes and accessories will never truly be out of style, meaning you’ll be able to wear them now, and then store them in the back of your wardrobe for when the fashion world goes for gold again.
