How To Do Group Fitness Right

How To Do Group Fitness Right

Not going to lie. The first time I decided to take a group fitness class I was completely mortified and too nervous to actually enjoy it. Call me silly, but sometimes, trying out a new class or fitness centre can be intimidating and you can really feel like everyone, but you know what to do. After visiting the YMCA of Greater Toronto and partaking in a few classes, I’ve learned a few tips on how to do a group fitness class right!

Keep Your Own Pace

As I mentioned, it can be incredibly intimidating to join a fitness class, but where you choose to do that class can be a huge part of determining if you’ll go back. I have taken classes before, but after enjoying some classes at the YMCA of Greater Toronto; I realized that the main reason for my hesitation was that in past classes the environment didn’t feel welcoming. Since the Y welcomes individuals of all ages, race and fitness levels, the vibe at the Y is an inclusive one, which is 1 of the 5 key factors that set the YMCA apart from other fitness centes.

That said, once you are a part of a supportive community, it’s important to go at your own pace. It’s important to know that even though you are a part of a class, everyone has their own fitness journey and has started somewhere. What I appreciated most from the Y is the fact that they focus more on the commitment and drive when you sweat rather than a specific fitness goal!

Stick to a Schedule

My least favourite fitness class will always be the first one. Once you know the drill it’s way easier to calm your nerves and know what to expect This is why when I find a class or community I like I find myself returning so that I can create my own schedule, which in turn keeps me motivated. A clear schedule is a sure way to get your fitness journey on track a place like the YMCA of Greater Toronto gives you the opportunity to create a schedule that not only works for your fitness journey, but for your lifestyle as well.

Create Your Own Community

After attending a few fitness classes, you tend to get an understanding of the regulars. At this point, it’s beneficial to create your own little tribe within a community to help you stay motivated and keep you on track. Because the YMCA is so community driven and they focus on inclusivity with members of all fitness backgrounds I love that I can be a part of something much bigger than just a workout. And since the Y celebrates sweat as a symbol of achievement, I can get a workout in at the Y while not only working towards my fitness goals, but also helping to build my community at the same time.

Don’t Take Yourself too Seriously

As important as it is to stay focused on your fitness journey, there is no reason why you can’t have fun while you do it! Going to a group fitness class can create a fun and encouraging environment, so why not make the most of it. With diverse programs for every stage of life and classes like Arriba, you can sweat for positive change in your community while having fun!

The Y has made me feel supported in my health goals. The Y believes that everyone can improve. Being a part of such a positive environment takes the stress out of reaching your goals, and makes fitness a fun and exciting journey!

The YMCA of Greater Toronto has a wide range of fitness classes to choose from, so if you typically shy away from group fitness classes and you are looking for that support and encouragement, I urge you to visit the Y and hey, even join me in a class!
