Marilyn Monroe Inspired 1950’s Vintage Beach Shoot

Marilyn Monroe is a true definition of the word “icon”. She embodied everything that women wanted, want, and will want to be. We’re not really talking about her public image and what the media portrayed her as, but more of what we see in photography. The famous saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words” describes the situation perfectly. Images of Monroe really illustrate who she was as an actress, a woman, and a person: funny, sweet, genuine, vulnerable, loving, beautiful, and hopeful.

One of our favourite photo sessions has to be the one shot in 1949 at Tobey Beach by Andre De Dienes. It captures the feel of the era so well along with the true essence of Marilyn. Everything from the styling, hair, and make-up, to the lighting, backdrop, and quality is just breathtaking.

We may never be able to go back in time and see this in person but what’s amazing is that we can definitely recreate it today. Recently we discovered young and talented photographer Annuj Yoganathan of Impressions by Annuj and immediately fell in love with his work. We selected a few shots from his “1950’s Vintage Beach Shoot” to share with all of you. Tanya Yoganathan, the stylist behind it all told us, “I was inspired by the infamous Marilyn Monroe beach shoot – right down to the umbrella.”

We’re not sure what Oscar Wilde’s opinion on this would be but we think this is a lovely example of art imitating life imitating art imitating life (ha!). If you love these pictures as much as we do then head over to Impressions by Annuj and check out some more – he’s accepting bookings right now for 2012-2013! Also, if you’re looking at these photos and thinking, “I wish my hair looked like that”, we have some good news – IT CAN! Justyna Mroz was the talented hair stylist for this shoot – check her out at Justyna Mroz Hair Artist!
