World Malbec Day Toronto 2014 – An Argentinian Celebration

I’m in favour of most celebratory wine events and World Malbec Day was no exception. I had a stressful day that required a glass (or two) regardless, so the timing was perfect. My fiancé (aka drinking buddy) and I headed down to The Great Hall on Queen West for iYellowWineClub’s Malbec World Day Toronto celebration. As Argentina is also known for its spectacular red meat, not only were there a wide variety of Malbecs to try, there were braised beef tacos (shaved from beef on a spit roast) and other meaty Argentinian delicacies.

Three DJ decks filled the stage, rotating between each, spinning three very different types of music (one attendee definitely thought he was at a Full Moon Party in Thailand). Most brands had a few different varietals to sample including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrahs and Argentinian red blends, making the sampling experience itself full bodied. The event felt like how a Malbec should taste: dark, luscious and spicy….(and full of dark fruit? Maybe not that part…)

I’ll admit, I don’t know much about Malbec so this was a fabulous learning opportunity as well as a great night out. Let me summarize my findings for you:

  1. Malbec is more inexpensive than many other wines. This is not a reflection of quality (we discovered a delicious Malbec called Alamos for $13.95 available at the LCBO), only that land and labour are both cheaper in Argentina. Inexpensive and delicious? Im in!
  2. If you like a full-bodied red, a blend of Tempranillo (Spanish grape) and Malbec is definitely a way to go (Try Urban Uco at the LCBO for $13.70).
  3. Malbec generally tastes of dark fruit with hints of chocolate and spice- Sometimes this ‘chocolate’ can be a dark and bitter one. If you are not a fan of dark chocolate, avoid Norton Malbec Reserva (also available at the LCBO for $17.95) but if dark chocolate is your thing, go for it!
  4. Remember to dump and/or spit in order to avoid a headache the next day….(This one is a given but often the easiest to forget).
  5. I should definitely drink more Malbec

In all, World Malbec Day Toronto was a great experience- True to iYellow Wine Club’s form, they produced another hit event. If you are a fan of South African wines, check out their ‘South Africa Taste & Tweet,’ happening on April 22nd.  In the meantime, grab a bottle of Malbec, throw some tasty eats on the grill and celebrate the beautiful flavours that come out of Argentina.
