World Mastercard Fashion Week S/S 2014: Backstage with Redken’s Jorge Joao

Jorge Joao

Redken’s Artist and Lead Stylist Jorge Joao has the daunting task of collaborating with each designer and creating the memorable hairstyles that each model will don as he or she walks down that runway, and yet he was one of the most calm and collected backstage on Day 2 of World MasterCard Fashion Week. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jorge between the Mélissa Nepton and Sid Neigum shows and chatted about the looks for each show. I also managed to get a secret of the trade to share with you all: his number one product that all women must have for perfect hair.

Luckily the two looks couldn’t be more different so whether you are a fan of the au natural beachy wave look or you’re in the mood for something a little more structured, Redken has you covered.

Strong lines, straight geometric shapes, and tons of shine defined the hairstyles for this show.

The designer wanted to go with a Geisha-inspired look and to achieve this you start with flat-ironed hair and smooth it down with Redken Two Smooth 03. To create the half-up half-down ponytail: section your hair from ear to ear with a comb, brush all the hair away from your face, and secure with an elastic. The most important part of the entire look is the ponytail wrap. You’ll want to use ribbon, Jorge used actual material from the designer’s collection, and you wrap the entire ponytail from top to bottom, make sure to secure at bottom.

Finish the look with Fashion Work 12 to catch any fly aways.

The designer was going for the disheveled look and Jorge wanted to create the illusion as if the models just rolled out of bed and were ready to take on the night, which is great news because it means this look is easy to recreate.

To look like you just stepped of the Sid Neigum runway prep hair with Redken Iron Shape 11 and then curl hair using a curling iron in random sections. This is the no muss, no fuss guide to curling your hair, so remember: there is no wrong way to do it!

To complete the look pull apart the ends so the curls don’t group together and spritz on the sea salt-infused Redken Fashion Waves 07. This is the product Jorge swears is essential for every girl and it is a product that he created with Redken to help deliver the natural, beachy waves we all dream of!
